Lost post

Really Here
Just had my ritual souvlaki meal at Thanasos in Athens & feeling that I'm defintely on holiday now. Had a good trip to Bangkok - spare seat next to me - so could spread out. First time had no jet lag. Secret is no alcohol & being totally hydrated a couple of days before setting out. Laxed out in Bel Aire Princess hotel pool for hours first day. Just as well I did, as we had an amazing thunderstorm the next day. Soi 5 has a new minimarket, but I can't go past Farmlands. Didn't sleep much the next day, in fact I had been awake 36 hours before crashing out at Yianni's hotel this morning. Couldn't get into my room until 11.00, so I headed out to Pireaus to buy my ferry ticket for tomorrow night's crossing to Crete. For those of you have travelled that tortuous path-crossing the highway to the dock-you'll be pleased to hear that there is now an overbridge, complete with escalators. One less obstacle for me tomorrow. Well I can feel that beer getting to me now, so better head off for more sleep. Hope all goes well with the sport Lucy & Tawhai, & school too for you both & Phil. All the best for Ero Maurie.

Player of the Day
This will probably be my last blog with pics for a while, as I'm off on my travels on Monday, & I think it will be easier on the wallet to blog via email most of the time. Lucy had her first soccer game of the season today. 
The weather was great & the team played well against Edgecumbe. Our girls weren't the victors this time - mainly through lack of fitness Id say. However, Lucy played well in the No 12 jersey, & was outstanding as goalie in the second half. She was awarded Player of the Day for her efforts.
I'm counting down for my trip & making adjustments to my itinerary. The Battle of Crete commemorations have been unexpectedly split between two weekends this time, which has caused major problems for the Brit contingent. I'm just lucky that I'll still be on Crete for the Galatas events - particularly important for Kiwis. Check Picasa for extra pics

Rotorua Marathon
We drove over to Taupo last Friday to stay with Janine before travelling to Rotorua for the Marathon on Saturday. Up until then we'd been having great weather, but unfortunately the rain started the night 
before & didn't let up until Saturday afternoon. So it wasn't very comfortable for those taking part - particularly for the slower walkers. With very little training Janine did very well, finishing around 6hrs 43min. 
Unfortunately Bunny was suffering from a tummy upset before he started, & developed a painful hip & foot during the walk. 
He had done the training, but on the day these other factors took over. He finished in just over 7hrs. Thankfully the new event centre in Rotorua was open for business, & we were able to wait in comfort until the prize giving. It was a long slow walk back to the car, where it was coffee time, a la street people, 
before heading off on our separate ways.
The next day dawned bright & sunny - wouldn't you know it! So it was ideal for two bloody minded guys to contemplate the joys of exercise,
the sheer exhilaration of pushing the body to the limit. Looks like fun.

School Hols Almost Finished
Well the school hols are almost finished, but I've had a relaxing time catching up with friends, reading & doing the odd job around the house. Plus I've almost finished the paper work & other last minute arrangements for my trip to Greece next month. The fantastic weather has been the icing on the cake. Lucky I saw the sunset last night & got this pic. 
Today I saw the chimney sweep at work on the neighbours' house - doing a bit of pre-winter maintenance. At least I hope that's what was going on, & it was not anything to do with the recently deceased cat.

Holidays
Term 2 finished & the holidays have begun. Janine & Philip came over for a couple of nights over Easter. Janine wanted to get a long training walk in for the Rotorua Marathon, but didn't trust herself to do it alone in Taupo, so she & Bunny made an early start on Saturday for a 30k trek. The weather was ideal, & Janine managed it very well. I never know how she does these things without regular training. While she & Bunny were doing their bit, Maurie & Co were doing an ultra event through the back roads from Whakatane to Taupo. I know there'll be so many stories about how they were denied first place in their category because of equipment malfunction! 
But I can testify to some last minute repairs the night before. I managed to get a good walk in on Saturday, & I hope that I can do more over the holidays. Easter Sunday saw another great day, & after Leigh had returned from her cycle challenge it was all on for the Easter egg hunt. This time Waitapu was here for her second Easter with us, & Philip enjoyed his first Easter celebrations here. After the collection it was time to share the goodies. As usual Leigh does her best to get more than her share.
All too soon it was time for Janine & Philip to leave for home, & for Leigh to head in the same direction to pick up the cross country cyclists. Bring on more good weather, so I can do more walking & maybe get into the garden.
