Youngest member of the Whanau

P1010462Originally uploaded by Ariadne2007.
Today we met Maia Anahera, our great granddaughter, for the first time, & what a bonny baby she is. She looks so much like both Steven & Jamie-Lee did at that age. It was neat to see Steven, Karen, Sarah & Jamie-Lee again. Once again Steven brought over a couple of his famous bacon & egg pies for lunch . They were delicious. He gets his cooking skills from me of course. Check out Flickr for more pics.

Emma's Graduation

The weekend before last we traveled over to Hamilton for Emma's graduation from the Sir George Seymour Travel course. It was a proud moment for her, as well as for her Whanau, when she received her Advanced Travel & Tourism Certificate. Well done Emma. The pic is of her & boyfriend Fernando, who also graduated. Our stay in Hamilton was lovely, starting from staying in the comfortable & friendly Ventura Inn, then the nice meal at an outside table at the Iguana, afterwards a taxi ride by a neat Somali driver who had no idea where the Founders Theatre was, but after listening to all our garbled theories, got us there in no time. The ceremony was pretty long, but there were many musical items from both staff & students, which made it a fun night for all. After a couple of drinks we decided to walk back to our hotel via Victoria & Hood Sts. The Scene was just getting going, & although we were tempted, we resisted going to boogie, & headed off to our comfy beds. Sighhhh! I hate getting old.

YouTube

I've added a link to YouTube to the sidebar. If you type in Beyond the Fringe, Parkinson, you should get the video. The link I added in my previous post doesn't get the correct video. Hope this works.

Family Resemblance?

I was checking out some Alan Bennett videos on the weekend, & came across this classic. Am I the only one who thinks Peter Cook & Thomas look alike? I have no idea how to post a link to YouTube, so if you're interested here's the link:

Farewells & Cheers

Last week we farewelled our very good friend Snow. It was a release for him, after years of ill health, & in particular after the last 3 months in hospital. But when the time comes for the formal goodbyes it is always hard to accept the loss. We have felt privileged to have been part of their family for over 30 years, & it did us all good to take part in the celebration of his life. His life was one of utter devotion to his family, Maureen, his four daughters & their families. Family was everything to him, so it wasn't difficult to remember all the crazy times we shared.
We went back to Tauranga a couple of days later to be with Maureen for her birthday. It could have been a sad occasion, but it turned out to be a lovely day for her. The girls arranged for us to
meet at The Cornerstone pub at the new Bethlehem Shopping Centre. It was a good choice. Lovely food, casual atmosphere & great company.

These latest blogs are coming via flickr. I usually use Picasa, but I'm having probs uploading from it, so I'm trying this instead. I need more time to fine tune, but it seems OK for now.

Update

I haven't been in a blogging mood lately, mainly because of computer problems. Broadband is working OK, although the speed is a bit tardy, it is the general slowness of my computer which is driving me nuts at the moment. In spite of regular clean ups, & a recent increase in RAM, it's still not right. I'm convinced that it's all Windows fault, & I'm thinking of trying out Linux.
However, we did have one highlight recently & that was seeing Thomas when he came home for a few days R&R. We had a meal at our place for a belated birthday celebration for him. Great to have a get together again, but it would have been nice if Sam could have been there as well. I'm having probs uploading a photo of the evening, but it is in my Picasa Web Album if anyone is interested.

Testing from Home Page

Broadband Blues

A week ago I was all excited about what I wasn't going to do now that we were on broadband. After my initial foray, I found that I was unable to get an internet connection the next time I tried. I've spent hours trying to figure out what went wrong, & five calls to the Telecom Help desk, haven't been that helpful actually. However, I had some help from a techie friend today, & we decided to do a system restore. That seems to have done the trick as far as being able to connect to the internet again. I'm hoping that everything will be working again when next I hook up. In the meantime the vege garden has benefited from my frustration - it's practically weed free.

Broadband

After more than 2 weeks waiting for connection & a frustrating few hours of installing I'm happy to say that we now have broadband. Yesterday was my last day at work for this term, so I'm going to have more time to check out my favourite internet sites. Now I'm able to view the Greek language videos without them stopping & starting all the time. Pretty pleased about that.

Visiting Friends

On Saturday we drove over to Tauranga to visit our friend Snow who has been in hospital for around 6 weeks now. Unfortunately he was having a bad day. He had had a procedure done the day before which knocked him about, but he had his radio on & was able to have a go at guessing some of the old songs from his better days. It was very sad to see him in such a bad way. Later we went to lunch with Maureen at one of the cafes in the Gate Pa shopping centre. Maureen had...,Bunny had...& I had.....No need to know that, but the waiter was pretty tasty. While there I checked out the Culinary Council, a fab shop selling cooking equipment & imported foodstuffs. That's one place I'll be shopping at when I've made my millions. Later we drove out to Julie's & Andy's new property out Pyes's Pa. They had just taken it over, but they have to have some trees felled, & some fencing done before they move in. Julie was happy to show us around the place, & was full of plans for their outdoor living area, including an outdoor oven. I know that it will be the scene of many memorable happenings. Never thought to take our binoculars, as they have a great (though distant)view down to Katikati & the Aldermans.

Schoolboy Rugby Update

Tawhai appears to be having a very successful sporting year at Hato Paora. Not only was he selected for the under 18 Manawatu rugby side for the Hurricanes tournament, but he was also made captain of the team. His mum, Kerry, will be heading to Wanganui at the end of term as manager of the East Cape under 16 team. Good luck to all of them.

More Signs of Spring

Today I checked out the magnolia in our bush, & Leigh appeared just in time for this shot. Our broadband modem arrived today, but we're still waiting for someone to drop off the loop before we can connect. It's a bummer.

Scary Stuff

Today I ventured into Wiki territory for the first time. I was full of confidence in the light of day, but now that it's getting dark I'm not so sure. Everything's a bit random at the moment, but I guess I just have to find my way around this new territory. And if all else fails I can always bail out. I've put a link on the sidebar, plus I've added the Followers gadget as well. Now that is scary - maybe I won't get any. Also I made the big decision to sign up for broadband today, even though I know we're unable to get top class speed in this area. I got the phone call to say that I would have to wait, but maybe I'll be lucky like Maurie, & get connected pronto.

Welcome Home at Marg's

Last night we had a very pleasant evening at Marg's place, where we enjoyed a pot luck dinner in good company. The occasion was a welcome home to Maurie & Leigh. Andrew looks right chuffed with his Italian football cap.

Picasa 3 New Feature

I downloaded the latest version of Picasa a couple of days ago, & today I tried the new feature that appealed to me - uploading photos to Picasaweb via email. This was the first one I found in my email programme. Lucy & her catch early January this year. She's certainly had a growth spurt since then. This feature is designed to facilitate uploading from mobile phones & other such devices, so I'll give it a go with my phone when I've set up my email function in it. Where's Sam when we need him!! If you click on the pics you should see a bigger picture, plus access my pics on my Picasa Web Albums.

A Man & his Dog

I was trying to think of something deep & meaningful to write, then I came across this. How's that for loyalty! I forgot that I had taken this pic the night of Maurie & Leigh's return home.

Kereru

At last I managed to get a pic of the Kereru near our house. The bonus was discovering two of them above our deck. Not a good idea to sit out there while they're perched above us.

Travellers Return

It was great to see the sun shining again today. We drove over to Whakatane to pick up Maurie & Leigh after their fantastic trip. True to form we saw a couple of the locals at the airport, Kay & Hari, who were seeing family off. Also good to see Maurie & Leigh looking so relaxed. We then headed off to The Bean for a coffee hit. They hadn't had a decent coffee since Rome. I feel for them! I enjoyed listening to some of their experiences, & maybe I'll include Italy in my next trip.

Spring

The fruit trees are blossoming & the birds are busy. Here is the elusive Grey Warbler. I spotted it from my kitchen a couple of days ago. It was taking away nesting material from an old nest in the cherry tree. The Kereru have been very active lately, & I managed to get this shot today while one was perched above our drive. Note the blue sky. We've had the first sunny weekend for weeks.

Soccer trip

The 1st 11 left for Taupo this afternoon for their 4 day soccer tournament. After weeks of fund raising they were ready to head off. The van was crammed with girls, gear & FOOD. Ali liked the look of this cake.

Update

There hasn't been much to report lately. Blame it on the weather. Lucy's birthday was pretty low key mainly because the parents were absent again. Here's a pic of our Lake Hanaia on the day of the birthday. Lucy had a better time at her second family's place the next evening, where Tina made her some of the Armstong's famous fudge. Last week I caught up with Paul & granddaughter Becca from US. Nice to catch up with him after so long, & also to meet Donna's lovely daughter.
Last Saturday all of the Kiwi based group from this year's trip to Greece were able to come to our place for lunch & a catch up. So many photos! There wasn't enough time to to look at them all in depth, but afterwards I felt like I could do the trip again. I could kick myself that I forgot to take a pic of the gang while they were here. Here is one of them on their way in May.This week we've had a good spell of dry weather, but wouldn't you know it, it's going to be another wet weekend. I ventured down to the bog area a couple of days ago & got this pic of our creek. Then the same day I noticed the Plum tree blossoming.Spring is around the corner. Check out the Picasa link on the right for more pics.

Waiting for the Aeroplane

Drove to Whakatane this evening for Lucy's flight to Wellington. We were lucky that there was no rain or wind for the first time for days. The plane was late arriving so it meant a bit of a wait at the airport, but the Country Folks entertained the crowds. Lucy was surprised to see Caitlin arriving from Auckland, & had a bit of a catch up with her, & Jim Bennett was on Lucy's flight.

Stormy Weather

We battened down the hatches on the weekend ready for the weather bomb that was meant to hit us with 130k winds. We located the candles, torches & gas cooker, but fortunately we were spared the worst. Some parts of the country suffered badly & are still without power. Bunny, Lucy & I went down to Tirohanga Beach to check out the huge rollers. The beach was littered with debris, & we lost count of the huhu bugs. Enough for a good feed, but we opted for ice creams from the store instead. We didn't know at the time that a Sanford fishing boat had earlier got into difficulties at Hauhere, at Opape I think, with the result that two of the crew were lost. We were woken early in the morning with the sound of planes & helicopters, & wondered if they were searching for someone. There's now the problem of salvaging the boat & dealing with diesel.

Leigh London Bound

Leigh & Lucy being brave at a very wet Whakatane Airport. Leigh is on her way to meet up with Maurie in the UK. She should be boarding her flight to London right now, in a much more comfortable plane than the one below.

Cooking Demo - No Pigeon on the Menu

Yesterday we drove down to Hicks Bay with the car laden with cooking utensils & ingredients for my Thai Cooking demo there. Kerry had asked me to show some of the local members of the Maori Womens Welfare League a selection of Thai recipes. I hadn't any idea of the facilities there, but it was lovely working in a spacious kitchen in a lovely set up at Wharekahika. Everyone enjoyed the food, & I enjoyed meeting up with some familiar faces & meeting the new ones. They're a great bunch of women doing wonderful things for their Whanau. Here's a pic of the "farewell committee" We've noticed the Kereru around more frequently, & today I got a pic of one on a tree just outside our front door. I had to get down on my knees to get it, because of the angle, so its not a very good shot. I was hoping to get closer, but Tama decided to bark at it & it didn't happen. A few days ago one of Tama's fans from Holland sent me this fab pic of their champion Icelandic Shepherds. I'm sure Inge won't mind me posting it here.

Sabbatical & Polar Swim

Maurie left on Friday for the first leg of his 3 month Sabbatical. First stop Harvard for a 10 day course. He would have had a bumpy ride on the flight to Auckland, as we were having gale force winds at the time. Bunny lined up for his 10th Polar swim today. The sun came out briefly as the swimmers emerged from the sea, but the air was pretty raw today. On Saturday we saw our first Kereru for this season. We're looking forward to seeing these big birds closer to the house as the season progresses.

Kath's Memorial

Yesterday I received an unexpected email from Theo's son, Jacob, with photos from Crete of the planting of a memorial tree for Kath. This is the second tree that has been planted on Crete. The first one was planted at Antoni's holiday accommodation in Stalos. Unfortunately it didn't survive the transplanting. I think it was because it was too big when transplanted, & was unable to cope with the extreme winter gales that occur there. This second tree is small enough to take off, & its location at Zourva is particularly beautiful, & a place which Kath was very fond of.
